People in the Elizabethan England were much more religious than people today, nearly the whole population believed in God and expected to go to heaven or hell after they depart from earth. At the time Shakespeare was writing, England was a Protestant country, it had separated from the Catholic Church of Rome. Many went to church at least once a day, during her reign Queen Elizabeth I made attending church a mandatory event or fines would be issued to the citizens who didn’t. By discontinuing their partnership with the Catholic Church of Rome, there were many riots by Catholics and Non-Protestants directed to the monarchy.

The action was an attempt to give order, The Chain of Being was a hierarchy, the idea was that God created everything in that order that stretched from God himself down to the lowest things in existence.
