Under the order of the queen, England thrived. The civil war had been resolved and England was able to defeat the famous and all-powerful Spanish Armada. Under Elizabeth, England developed to be a formidable nation.
Based on female characters, Shakespeare’s plays had a substantial amount of commanding ladies especially in his comedies. Think of Portia, beautiful, intelligent, and rich.
Almost all his plays were based outside of England, which is interesting because he lived in England. By writing in this style he showed his profound knowledge of themes even outside his homeland. They were quite accurate representations of modern concerns and themes, which also existed in his time.
He was a great student of human nature, with tragedies that explored man's passions. In the plays of Shakespeare, he used the world that he knew to explore human conflict. He wrote about flaws being revealed in the way that society functioned by developing characters that acted outside the expectations of society. He is most famous for creating strong female characters that stood up to social expectations to express themselves and reach their needs. He also highlighted the dominance of the human spirit.
